Password-protect a PDF without uploading
Encrypt a PDF with a password in your browser. Share the key out-of-band — the plaintext file never hits a protect SaaS.
Why set the password locally
Upload-based “protect PDF” sites see the unprotected file before encryption. Local protection encrypts on your device so the plaintext never leaves the machine. Send the password by a separate channel — call, Signal, or a different email thread.
Protect after clean-up
Redact visible secrets and remove metadata first. Then open Protect PDF, set a strong password, and download the locked copy. Unlock later only when you own the password and need to edit again.
Protect is not redaction
Anyone with the password can read everything still on the page. If a recipient should never see certain fields, redact those regions before protecting. Use both layers for sensitive releases.
